Areal Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a

* urban and small stream flood advisory for...
northeastern Talladega County in east central Alabama...
western Calhoun County in east central Alabama...
central Etowah County in northeastern Alabama...
northeastern St. Clair County in central Alabama...

* until 915 PM CDT.

* At 710 PM CDT, trained weather spotters reported heavy rain of
nearly 2.4 inches have fallen in Rainbow City in Etowah County
over the past 2 hours due to thunderstorms. This will cause urban
and small stream flooding.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Gadsden, Anniston, Oxford, Rainbow City, Attalla, Hokes Bluff, west
end-Cobb Town, Cobb Town, Saks, Lincoln, Glencoe, Weaver, Ashville,
Ragland, Munford, Ohatchee, Steele, Altoona, Hobson City and Walnut
Grove.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate Route.

... Significant weather advisory for northeastern Talladega... east
central Blount... western Calhoun... southwestern Etowah and
northeastern St. Clair counties until 745 PM CDT...

At 658 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Steele to Bynum. Movement was southwest at
15 mph.

Pea size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with these
storms.

Locations impacted include...
Gadsden, Anniston, Talladega, Rainbow City, Attalla, Cobb Town, west
end-Cobb Town, Lincoln, Ashville, Riverside, Ragland, Munford,
Ohatchee, Steele, Talladega superspeedway, Talladega Municipal
Airport, Honda manufacturing of Alabama, Bynum, Neely Henry Lake and
Alexandria.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

a line extending from Gadsden mall to Jacksonville State University
to near Mars hills to 6 miles west of Ranburne. Movement was
southwest at 20 mph.

Pea size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with these
storms.

Hokes Bluff, Heflin, west end-Cobb Town, Cobb Town, fort McClellan,
