Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 3:02 AM EST Jan. 23, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 7 am EST this morning
through this afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a beach
hazards statement for longshore currents and a moderate risk of
rip currents, which is in effect through 7 PM.

* Hazards... a strong northward flowing longshore current, and
life threatening rip currents.

* Timing... the threat for rip currents will be highest this
afternoon due to tidal effects, except they will exist all day
near piers, jetties and reefs.

* Potential impacts... rough surf and strong winds can knock you
down and make you susceptible to seaward flowing rip currents.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
