Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 5:28 AM EDT Sep. 23, 2018 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 900 am EDT for
Alleghany County in west central Virginia... Craig County in
southwestern Virginia... Bath County in west central Virginia and
Montgomery counties in southwestern Virginia and the city of
Covington...

At 523 am EDT, runoff from slow moving thunderstorms with very heavy
rainfall Saturday night across the warned area will continue
flooding this morning. Up to two inches of rain fell across portions
of the region. In Montgomery County, the Department of
Transportation reported that Route 712, Taylor Road and Route 660,
Crab Creek Road were closed due to flooding. Several creek and
stream levels were near bankfull across the area. The South Fork of
the Roanoke River near Shawsville was flooding with a reading at
5.07 feet and rising this morning. Minor flooding is occurring
adjacent to the river in Shawsville. If the river rising to 7 feet,
flooding occurs along old Roanoke Road off Route 460. The Roanoke
River at Lafayette was at 7.2 feet and rising.

and Covington.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding,
including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather Service
