ON A LIGHTER NOTE....

May 14, 8PM--Bangor is getting close to 15 hours of daylight now. It's still light outside now, even though it's cloudy...

It's been a cloudy and somewhat chilly first few days of May. A month ago when everything was brown I would have called it downright gloomy weather. But the much needed rain has caused an explosion of green in the trees, along with wildflower blues, purples, pinks and yellows at ground level. Add in the apple blossom whites in the lower tree canopy, the chirping birds and other small critters cavorting around the yard, and it is far from gloomy. I have my paradise back, even when the sun doesn't shine! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the clouds to part this afternoon in time for the full "super moon" to rise shortly before sunset. With that timing, I might get a bonus orange spotlight in the sky around 8PM tonight...

UPDATE May 8th--I got my wish for the clouds to break Saturday afternoon, and then the end of the day was the "warmest", up from 55 degrees at 3PM to 62 an hour later with the sun. I took a walk out the fairway to a high point for the moon view. No golfers after dark. Moonrise was ten minutes before sunset up in this neck of the woods. The moon was orange for about 15 minutes before it returned to it's regular program. All in all, a fairly good show...BANGOR enjoyed sunny skies Sunday and Monday, which caused the vegetation to really explode. So now I must mow my lawn again this morning before the rain arrives this afternoon...

Will this Winter mirror last year? It won't bother me one bit if it does. Last Winter started typical enough, and so far Bangor has been on the same path. As with last Winter, we have started out a little above average on snowfall. Last year, 14 inches of snow fell January 18-20th, and that was the end of the heavy stuff. A record rainfall of 1.71" and 51 degrees melted most of the snow on January 25. Winter was effectively over after that. A few stray inches...

...Brings Mud Season! And any snow that falls is called "Poor man's fertilizer." Especially after the farmers plow the fields. Yes it can still snow well into April, even double digits. The 3rd & 4th, 1975 (12.7"), and the 6th & 7th, 1982 are good examples. Now I can add the 4th & 5th, 2007 to the list. The 10.4" on 4-13-1962 is the latest recorded double digit snowfall. The 30th is the only day without recorded snow--AVERAGES & RECORDS:4-01: 46/28 64(1986) 4...
