Life Along Lake Michigan

It's the beginning of tulip Time in Holland, MI. It is a celebration of the Dutch heritage of our city. The fireworks over Lake Michigan kicked off the annual event last night and the streets this week will be filled with locals dressed in traditional Dutch costumes and performing their klompen dances in wooden shoes. Parades on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday round out the colorful celebration.

later this week, I have a half day off of school. Thursday afternoon is the traditional day of the Children's Costume Parade. The local schools participate by providing the children and teachers a half day off to dress in their traditional Dutch costume and parade along the main street accompanied by the local marching bands. The Holland High School bands plays Tip Toe Through the Tulips as they clickety clack along wearing their wooden shoes. Colorful and fun for all!

Spring came early in March and then played a whole month's worth of April Fools. Frosty and dry prevailed throughout much of this month. What will May bring?

The daffodils are in bloom and the tulips are budded. Maple leaves have shed their outer shell and are red and ready to unfold. The last two days have been the warmest March days in recorded history. 83F.I am outdoors every evening enjoying the mild and sunny weather. I can't believe our good fortune top be enjoying these sunny days. Sadly, these beautiful apple blossoms likely spell doom for the local farmers. We are at least 2 months away from the last frost date....

I think I will "borrow" an image of a robin from Puget because my sister saw the first robin in our neighborhood this past week. She has a goldfish pond in her backyard that she keeps from freezing each winter. 5 robins were bathing in it on Saturday morning! The robins along with the maple syrup collection buckets on our street certainly signal the first steps of spring!Puget: Thanks for the great image! Let me know if you prefer I take it down!
