Weather Underground: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the WUblogger ship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new blogs, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly blog where no one has blogged before.

But it ain't over yet, so get yourself a bloggin!!!!!

Well it has been fun!! When I first came here in 2008, I could not believe how badly people talked to one another, the hurtful awful things that were said. It was like a horrible reality show to me. Then I found real people here that were kind and thoughtful and helpful. I am deep inside a shy person so that first comment I made was really hard:)) Then the first blog was even harder. Everyone was so funny and wrote so well, but I found that I was in a very welcoming community and soon the shyness wore off and even if I did not write so well no one seemed to care!

While I have been here, my two sons got married, my one son procreated and so I have two beautiful grandchildren, I retired and started traveling even more then we did before retirement. My older son moved to Washington state, my youngest has been in Florida, Alaska, North Carolina and now going to Oregon.

We have let others into our lives, most of them we will never meet in person but that does not seem to matter. What matters is that we all care about each other:))

So I will see you at Flickr and at the Ark and some of you on Facebook.

In the mean time we can not get banned, whoo hooooooo!!!

Hi Bug! My allergy to horses is in my throat and bronchial area, the pollen is in my eyes and nose. Inside or outside the pollen gets to me.

Hi WW! It is fun to be with like minded people so gathering people together to go on nature hikes is just fun. We all learn a lot from each other.

Does the failure of the Trump healthcare bill mean you can keep on with your allergy shots?

Hi Poppy, Sounds like you are about to get your allergies under control, hopefully. I notice they are beginng to put the pollen alerts out and the tree pollen is what is listed here for next four days as high which is better than it was earlier this week.

The Bradford Pears get me even after the leaves are on - makes my eyes water like crazy. Enjoy your walk tomorrow. Neat idea the group coming out to your place. Perhaps I should do that with my group for my little city nature walk - quite a few interesting spots to point out along the way. I will think on that.

Have a good weekend, Poppy. Take care.

My PCP told me Tuesday that I have a type of 'asthmatic' allergy, related to all the pollens out there each spring. And, recently, early fall. They did a spirometry on me, gave me some sample inhalers, then had me come back for another spirometry. He doesn't think I need to use an inhaler daily for the rest of my life but he wrote a scrip for occasional use during pollen seasons.

As Sandi pointed out, American doctors dispense scrips like candy, compared to other countries.

I've got a snoozing kitty up on my other monitor. Wish I was home, snoozing! My bod still hasn't adjusted to the time change and I'm waking up around 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, etc. If I crack an eyelid, Gus rejoices. "SHE'S AWAKE! SHE'S AWAKE! FEED ME! FEED ME!" He won't let up and I finally give up and get up. I was walking into the office this morning about quarter of 7:00 and I can't clock in until 7:30.

Hi Ylee! So much for my memory:))

Hi WTS! I know the small amount of rain topped my barrel, have not used to much since I just use it for houseplants.

Hi Sandi! So sad, but at least you found out. There was a gal who blogged here she was in Pennsylvania. I can't remember her handle but she gardened and then did a photo a day of an area of her property. She finished up that project which was a year, her mom died and then poof she was gone. I still have her caramel popcorn recipe which was wonderful! She is the one I really wonder what happened. Then there was Catfuraplenty who was murdered, that was really horrific!!!

Hi PSP! It was wonderful to find you as a friend!!! I will always consider myself a PNW person, a great place to grow up in. I am happy that Brody and Kate will spend at least 4 years in a wonderful place. I have my fingers crossed that James ends up at least in Cali so you will be closer!

Today will be another busy day as I need to get many chores done as we will be gone all day tomorrow. Off to Afton Canyon on a Naturalist hike. This will be led by a Defenders of Wildlife biologist and we can bring TNT off leash, YAY! It is a very beautiful canyon in the desert with lots of different wildflowers for me to ooh and ahhh over.

Now fingers crossed this will happen. My allergist is trying to get my insurance company to give the okay for me to get cluster shots. Which is 5 shots in a 3 hour period (actually since each (shot) is really 2 shots so 10 altogether, confusing right?). So only a once a week trip for me, A huge time saver for me, I would be through and into maintenance shots in no time.

Been cool and cloudy off and on, nice break from that early much to warm of days for me. We went on a trial hike for my group coming out on the 8th, so only 3 miles, but it will take us awhile as we look and photograph and talk and all of that, LOL! I don't know if these people are hikers or not so I tamed the hike down a bit. If they are fit and ready we can go much further up into the hills.

Everyone have a super weekend, enjoy where ever you are!!

Hi! Time is ticking by now, and ticking down. Not too much longer to be viable here. I think everyone on this comment thread has shared similar experiences blogging on WU. And everyone figured out to pretty much narrow their field down to the friendly group represented in these comments. It has been fun to find common elements in our scattered lives across the country too - for example, Cal really is rooted in my NW, now has a son in the area and another one coming! And, we share the experience of very similar-aged grandchildren who live on the opposite coasts from us too. Desert life/land of rain life give a definite contrast, which makes it interesting to chat as friends too. Everyone's lives have been enriched by the friends they have found here on WU! Thanks to everyone for the experiences! See you around on Flickr!

they wish people would not just disappear from here , that they would at least tell us they were no longer blogging. For me it always leaves you wondering what happened!

Way back in 2005 I met a Canadian called Charles Buckingham here on WU. He began chatting to me via mail as he worked nights - like Ylee - and he would mail me at least once a week during his break.

We exchanged outer mail and addresses, and I sent the family a Christmas card for several years. Then in 2012 he became ill, and kept in touch less frequently. In the summer he was in hospital for a few weeks and I got a mail from him in November - then heard no more.
I sent a Christmas card but wasn't sure what was happening. Then in the early February I got a mail from his wife telling me he had passed away just before Christmas. She wanted me to know because ... "Your mails meant so much to him "

I have to admit I shed a few tears, as he had been such a great personality.

Four days a week...for how much longer do you think??

Morning giggles from Ylee - "Didn't have much to contribute(Still don't, really, " - hooo, that's a good one :')

We're up to at least 6 hooded orioles now, I have seen 5 males at once an one female. The chatter is really picking up :-))

Only drizzle here so far, not contributing to the rain barrel :-(

Hi Ylee! I thought you first blog did not have a cam????

As I said on the Fin blog, the first cam of my first blog was the Zion cam. Didn't have much to contribute(Still don't, really, lol), so I posted webcams I liked(and could access) from the start.

Hi Bug! You were one of the early bloggers! It has been fun getting to know everyone here. I remember a blogger saying that they wish people would not just disappear from here , that they would at least tell us they were no longer blogging. For me it always leaves you wondering what happened!

Hi WW! Wonderful new birdhouses for your pretty yard!!!! Oh and that table is awesome!

Hi Sandi, one is in my purse as well as the instructions in case i forget:)) That sucker goes right through your clothing in my case would be jeans, must be quite the needle, LOL! Though that is hidden, I think if we saw it we would think twice:)

Hi Karen!! Yes I am glad also that we became friends especially since we have a grand the same age:)) FB has been a learning experience for me, not always good. But a gal I knew in the garden business found me on a wildlife page and we became friends again, so that was cool.

Hi WTS! We have had to water some things, but the rain we got yesterday was a 5 minute quick shower:(( Lots of fog last night and this morning though! We probably will have to set up our watering system soon, at least for the greenhouse and the berry garden.

Hi GG! I remember one of Sandi's blogs where she was in London (I think), I wish I had seen her British tour blogs. We have some get er done people here, between Sandi, Aqua and Rob. I am so thankful for them so we all have a place to keep in touch. We need to find a way for WTS to keep up his hummer cam, I think Rob is working on a place for Ylee's cams. Some of those old chat rooms were something!!! That is why WU was so special!!!

I am thinking that I had better get my allergy shots over with quickly, at least get to maintenance stage before they yank my health insurance! So I will be traveling more, at least 4 days a week:((( The way it is now:(

Foggy morning and night, maybe more rain on the way, hopefully more then a sprinkle????

Female oriole has arrived, but haven't seen any other kinds of orioles except the Scotts.

Hi Calpoppy. Oh the first WU blogs. I started as a lurker. Liked lurking at Sandi's blog when Tom and Veracity were there. It was like the British version of Rob's blog. Quite entertaining.

I worked nights and spent lots of time on the web. Found a lot of chat rooms but they really were not appropriate places for someone in a committed relationship. (who'ed a thunk I was the only one actually committed to it.) Wunderground had people that talked about gardening and weather and science and just general chit chat of normal people not visiting a "meat market".

Such great people. Hope we can all stay in touch and still share birds -n- critter stories, gardens, plants, weather, laughter and Ylee's web cams.

If the world is perfect, WTS will be able to keep his hummer cams going where we can see them.

Rain coming, I think! I hope so anyway, My tiny front lawn is getting crunchy in a couple spots, haven't had the sprinklers on this year - but soon if it doesn't rain this week.

Yes, our wonderful potus is a dumpster fire and he seems to be convincing enough of the GOP to dive in.

Hi CP, I'm so glad we became friends on here and on FB as well. I do remember some of the angst in the beginning with the blogs, but like all things, you have choices. Go in and be part of it, or just stay out. Since I never have to worry about hurricanes I have rarely stepped into the weather blogs that this site offers, and I understand that's where a lot of the bickering came about.

I created my own "favorites" list when WU made that available and those were the only blogs I visited. It kept things very narrow for me. I kind of consider it just like FB. If I really don't like what someone has posted, I either hide it or unfriend them. You don't have to remain friends with everybody. I scroll past a lot of the political stuff because I'd rather hear what's going on when I watch PBS Newshour. Again - choices.

Are you going to get any of this rain? We had some sprinkles last night and it's very cloudy out now. But, now I've got to run ot the grocery store and perhaps get in the pool, I'll keep my eye to the sky. Hubby is out with Hudson on a walk, while I tended to my mom this morning. And so it goes........

I agree with Sandi - love the Star Trek riff and I also say, 'Live long and prosper!'

I joined in October 2005 and was a bit intimidated at first. I'd heard of something called 'blogs' but had no idea what they were. I lurked a bit, then made my first tentative comment in Dr. M's blog and was pretty much ignored. I didn't know blog etiquette, either, which didn't help. Not that I ever said anything mean or nasty or disrespectful. I just didn't know some of the basic do's and don't's of online chatting. (I'd never seen a chat room or forum, either.)

I didn't let that deter me. I put up my first blog within days. As time went on, I learned blog etiquette, made a lot of aquaintances, met some trolls, then true friends. The rest, you know!

Wow that is really clever Mass!!! It is difficult to be changing sites all the time, LOL! I am still here for the time being, and just occasional in the other places.

Hi Ylee! I had gotten over it by then, LOL! And yes I liked your blog even before you had cams!

Hi Sandi! I think I probably did the right thing for my ego by establishing myself in others blogs first before embarking on a blog of my own. If I had seen my blog vanish into the nether regions I would have just walked away with my head down, LOL! I read a party on the first!! Yay!!!

Hi WTS! There are many kindred spirits here, which is what makes it so special. All the haters have left or been banned. WU was my first experience in social media and was not a good experience at the beginning. I have seen it on FB also, some people just want to be mean, like our Pres:)))))

Well guess what miracles happen I final have in my hands an EpiPen, LOL! How long did it take to get one, hummm I think I tried since August. Some of the time was my fault because I had simple given up, but then decided to get on them again. And today I had to have a 3 way discussion with my doctor's office, myself and the pharmacy just to get a damn prescription refilled. What the heck. I have been trying for two weeks, the doctor's office or the doctor himself kept writing the prescription out wrong!!!!! Ay yi yi! Give me my Kaiser back:)))) Oh that is right I may not have insurance since the Republicans are dead set on taking it away, and making people above the age of 50 pay MORE because they cost MORE cause their OLD and cause the Republican party has NO heart and NO soul anymore. They want more bombs so they can boast about being so GREAT Again, what a farce. I am so ashamed to be an American, I really really am!! They want to do away with Meals on Wheels, WHAT!!! I guess it would be cheaper to let the old people die of starvation:((((

Okay I feel better now, LOL! A beautiful day today, planted out potatoes and will actually grow one tomato. My chamomille is flowering nicely so tea for next winter is assured. Since we aren't leaving for a long time until September I will get to see the fruit of my labors and not the squirrels:))

Yep, it ain't over til it's over! But are you sure one couldn't get banned? Obviously, at this point it just doesn't matter LOL, sniff sniff - conflicting emotions - aaack

I joined in 2005 but did not blog until 2008. Funny, the first entry was grousing about the summer monsooon that we didn't get anymore LOL And no comment on my early bogs - Is this all there is? Well it was obviously the community that makes it work and I had to go looking for kindred spirits :-)

Reading your header rang a bell of remembrance.
I joined in 2004 initially to follow a hurricane that was heading for the Dominion Republic where my sister was on holiday. I lurked for the first year then finally plucked up courage to write a blog and comment on a few I had been following in the background.
In those days your blog fell down the blog list with the words 'no comments' if you had none! I watched mine sink into oblivion with the words 'no comments ' boring a hole in my head! So I tried again and this time OGal wrote to me! I was in.....:-)
Like you, I disliked the back biting, and the trolls, and the nastiness, and nearly gave up, but realised there was a handful of really honest and kind folk on here. As soon as we could pick our favourite bloggers and not see the rest if we didn't want to, things calmed down!
If you joined in 2008 you missed my retirement countdown - suggested by Wabit - when I wrote about my 37 years of teaching - one day for each year of the 37 years leading up to my last day. It is ten years ago this year.

Love your Star Trek analogy..... I only have one thing to say to you......"Live Long and Prosper"!!!

As Ylee said....see you on the other side :-)

Cal! ~ Sorry I haven't had the opportunity to respond to some of your blogs or posts left on my site, as I've been so busy transferring stuff from my blog, joining the other newer blogsites listed, as well as in my personal life. Glad we'll be able to extend our WU contact to these newer sources. Your blogheader statement, above, sounds exactly like what I felt when first joining here first as a lurker then poster back in June of 09. Like you, time and patience allowed me to seek out and gravitate toward those who were much kinder or benevolent rather than those malicious or nefarious sorts. Thought I'd leave you with a little lyrical parody I created to Joni Mitchell's tune, "Yellow Taxi". It seems a fitting end and hope it also provides a chuckle or two.

I found an old tune (and added some parodied lyrics of my own) that seem to also mimic both our lot in life here on WU and sometimes life in general.

Big Yellow Taxi
Joni Mitchell,

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
(With a smaller website, one blog
...a dwindling) hot spot!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the (BLOGS)
And put them in a (BLOG MUSEUM)
And they'll charge all the people
(Quite some dollars) just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And they put up a parking lot

Hey (blogger, blogger)
Put away that D.D.T. now
(We've got new sites on Flickr, Disqus,
the New Ark, please go see them)
Please!!!!!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big (corporate giant)
Took away my (WU fans)
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot

Original songwriter: Joni Mitchell
